The Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) unanimously voted to call Dr. Raymond R. Roberts as the candidate for our next Pastor / Head of Staff at River Road Presbyterian Church, and on June 21, the Congregation of RRPC unanimously voted to extend the call to Ray Roberts.
Dr. Roberts (Ray) grew up in Farmington, Missouri. Ray came to faith in Jesus Christ while an undergraduate at Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri. During that time, he began working with Young Life and preaching at a nearby rural Presbyterian church. He received his B.A. in Economics from Westminster College, his M.Div. from Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur, Georgia, and his Ph.D. in History and Theology from Union/PSCE. In 1984, Ray was ordained as a Minister of Word and Sacrament in the PC(USA). Ray has a great deal of church experience including serving as Parish Associate for Evangelism at RRPC from 1993-1995. Most recently, Ray was the Head of Staff at the Presbyterian Church in Westfield, Westfield, New Jersey since 2005.
Ray also serves as co-chair of the Advisory Committee for Social Witness Policy for the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church. In this role, he is a corresponding member of the Presbyterian Mission Agency, which manages national and international missions of the denomination.
Ray and his wife, Sallie, met while he was at Columbia and she was at Agnes Scott College. They married in Fredericksburg in 1984. Their two children, Harrison and Katherine, both returned to Virginia for college (University of Mary Washington and Washington and Lee, respectively) and married their college sweethearts. Harrison and Anne live in Fredericksburg, while Katherine and Andrew live in Tallahassee and just had their first child.
Ray enjoys writing music, playing music, gardening, and exercising. Sallie has been employed as a paralegal for the last several years. She enjoys gardening with Ray, singing in the Chancel Choir, and has led several Cherub Choirs. They are excited about their roles as new grandparents.
From Ray - "The wonderful people on the search committee reminded me of this congregation's many strengths, including the genuine affection shared among its members. I sense a good 'fit' between RRPC and my gifts and experiences. We are ministering in a time of enormous cultural and church transition. I look forward to working with the members of the River Road Presbyterian Church to find new, effective ways to carry out the mission of Jesus Christ."
